Social Media Follow Buttons

Social Media plugins tend to be real resource hogs (That means they can really slow your site down). They often have hundreds of files and images that add overhead to your site as the plugin loads and displays. Therefore, an off-site routine that loads icons from a different server is a very good thing. So let’s get started.

This is a follow-up post to the one a week ago on how to add social media share buttons without a plugin.

Today we are covering follow buttons.

AddThis.com Follow Buttons

If you used the code from the last post to add the social share buttons you won’t need to add it again.  But if you are only adding Follow buttons then you will need to place this code in the header.php before the </head> tag. If using Genesis place in the WP_Head Hook (I recommend getting the Genesis Simple Hooks Plugin) check Execute PHP on this hook?

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#pubid=xa-503266ce7d1b990a"></script>

A Video is worth a few thousand words

In the video example I’m using the balance theme (Modified of course) and for any Genesis theme with a header right widget area this should work about the same.

But you can put these social Follow buttons anywhere; in the theme files (Not recommended) or in a text widget, which is easier. Once in place you have social Follow buttons to all your social media accounts and you did it without adding another plugin to your site. That is a job well done.
