Columns in Your Posts for a Change

Columns Add To Your Post

Columns Add To Your Post

There’s a nice plugin (WP Columnize) that allows you to easily create columns for any post you desire. While it takes a little planning and a some creative editing it can add a nice flair your blog posts.

It is the kind of plugin you don’t have to spend a lot of time configuring.   Using it is very easy when you follow the authors suggestions for adding columns to your posts.

Download, install and activate the plugin.   Once it is activate go to your theme editor.   Add the following code to your Style.php file.

div.column-sect {
  clear: both;
  display: inline-block;
  overflow: auto;
}

div.post-column {
  display: inline;
  float: left;
  margin-right: 18px;
  text-align: justify;
  width: 45%;
}

For most blogs this should be all you need to do. For some you will have to tweak this code to fit your theme layout and style.

[col-sect][column]The author recommends you write you post then come back and add the columns  it is easy to do from the HTML tab.  There are column buttons there for starting and stopping a column section and individual columns themselves.  He is right about how easy it is to do at the end rather than setting the columns and then trying to type in those sections.[/column] [column]However, if you want it to look balanced you will need to tweak this a bit once you have your columns designated.  It might take a few save and previews to get them so they come out about the same.  I had to  add a sentence or take out a little to balance the ones I’ve done in a couple of test posts. I had to add this sentence for balance.[/column][/col-sect]

I like the fact the columns don’t have to be from top to bottom of a post.  You can have full size header and footer text in the post.  This lets you decide how long or short you want those columns to be.  They seem to handle images as well, but I haven’t done extensive testing of this.  Since I tend to like REALLY BIG IMAGES it is hard for me to come up with small ones to put in columns.  I could do it and use the lightbox plugin for a larger view, but so far I haven’t taken the time or gone to the effort to do so.

Here is an example of this plugin in action.

If you want to be creative and break up the appearance of your blog without having to change to a new theme.  The WP Columnize plugin will add that flair of creativity.  It also is fun to use and helps keep the process of blogging interesting and fun for you as well.

  1. Hi Dave – This looks like a very useful plug-in. I was trying to create tables on a post a couple days ago and was having a hell of a time. This would of been very useful. Thanks for sharing. If you this comment, you know its working now 😉

  2. Hi Dave. Just wanted to thank you for such a nice post about my plugin! I expect to make some further enhancements in the future such as column buttons in the visual editor, and the ability to style each column section, so keep an eye out for that!

    Thanks again!

  3. Darrin,

    Thanks for dropping by the Lab. You have a great plugin. Looking forward to those new features.

    I found your documentation on how to install and use exceptional. I wish more plugin authors would do as good a job documenting their plugin as you do. I honestly believe this is the main reason many plugins aren’t implemented, they are too hard to configure or difficult to remember how to use.
    Thanks again from all of us using your great plugin.

  4. Dave-
    Thanks for the heads up…like Jeff, there are times when as I am customizing blogs where this comes in truly handy and tables are a pain.

    Darrin- Nice plugin. I will be sending you some folks for it as well. Nicely done!
