Jon-Paul,

It has slowed for the past month. Most of the spam isn't from individuals. It is Porn and Drug sites using software to submit hundreds of spam comments an hour all over the web.

The others come from SEO companies hired to create back-links for their clients and they do it by finding do-follow blogs and leaving comments like "Great Post". Those all get dumped in the spam filter as well.

I’m going to read and follow your blog more; it’s interested to see what it’s going on in U.S market and of course the new things for the web pages and blogs. We don’t have so mush spam in our blogs in Spain and the same said my real estate friends. I’m surprised when you write that you get hundred an hour some days.

@Max @ Free Houston Lawyers - I've seen that functionality on other blogs, but I am not aware of how it is done.

I'll have to check that out.

Dave, thank you for the encouraging words! About the site, er, I am actually undergoing a redesign to alleviate that ambiguity.

By the way, may I suggest that you include a way for posters to modify their comment. I noticed a typo when it was just too late.

I have found your post extremely informative, and I am also very glad to have found the lab as well, thank you.

@Max @ Free Houston Lawyers - Max,

When you have been at this awhile it is easy to tell someone who is in-experienced from someone that is trolling for backlinks or trying to sell a product.

The purpose of this post is to inform those who might e new to commenting (such as yourself) and aren't aware of good commenting etiquette.

Newbies, are often given a "get out of jail free card" (thought that might be a good example you being with Free Houston Lawyers) BTW, does that mean they work for free or are in need of being freed?

Anyway, nothing you have posted is even close to breaking comment etiquette here. Glad you found the Lab.

Again, banning is never a happy pursuit.

Ok, so even though I'm not a spammer (HONEST!), I have to admit that I'm guilty of a couple of those commenting taboos... In my defense, I am kind of new to the whole website building/commenting scene. At any rate, I think it would be wise to express discretion while marking people as spam. There is no sense in punishing someone who didn't realize that they were in error. Beyond that great post, and happy banning!!

I also have a blog and honestly look for people to read it. This is a creative way to get this achieved, while social networking online at the same time. Do you agree?

Not sure what is being achieved. Do you agree? I'm not clear on what the question is enough to agree or disagree.

I personally never comment for a link. I comment to "comment" contribute, say something on my mind about the topic.

I guess I spend enough time writing posts I don't think much about it. While I have a lot of comments here at the lab. On the business blogs it is rare to have a comment yet I try and add new content every day. I don't always manage to do so but it is my goal.

Mary Ann,

I think there are so real newbies out there that have been told to leave comments on blogs it will help their SEO. BAD ADVICE.

Margaret,

Most who leave these types of comments don't have a clue what social networking is. Most barely know what a blog is : )
