Cross Linking is Good Approving the Pingback is Bad

A Quick Sunday Tidbit

We all know deep linking and cross linking our posts is good SEO and it is good to help readers navigate to relative content in other posts.

When you link to an older post from a new one you usually get a ping back as soon as you publish your post.

DON’T approve those pingback comments. They appear as spammy, you are already linking to yourself, you don’t need to link again. It is too much of a good thing.

What do you do with them?

LOL, well one thing you don’t do. Don’t accidentally put them in your spam filter. That is even worse than approving them.

Delete them. Short Simple and the plain truth. I know it is painful. But it is for the best.

  1. I have to agree… EXCEPT for one purpose. I believe that if the source of the link is extremely reputable and you’re looking to build PR it can be a great thing to publish a permalink. Have a great one!

    Dave,

Great to see you here at the Lab.

You might have read this just a little too fast.

This post is about publishing your own pingbacks when you link in a new post to an older post. Not pingbacks in general. Have a great week.

Hi I’m a newbie here. Thanks for your useful tip. But I have one doubt, For what reason we shouldn’t put that comments on spam folder? Why should we delete that??

Because WordPress generates that pingback automatically. It is your comment pingback. If you put it in spam you are saying YOU ARE A SPAMMER and Askimet will put all of your comments “automatically” in the spam filter on all blogs using Askimet.

That is why it is worse than approving them.

Yup, that’s exactly how that works. I’ve also taken it as “friendly practice” to remove the no-follow rule that works by default on wordpress, so I can share my own ranking with the rest of the world!

  10. Betty says:

Up to now I didn’t try to link older posts. But I would not expect to see a pingback since it’s an internal page. I thought they are only applicable for external links.

    Betty,

I have to smile on this one. Try it! WordPress will send you a pingback from the new post to the old post. It works inside as well and WP does it automatically. Don’t approve the pingback, BUT DON’T send it to spam! simply delete them.

    SEO Tips,

Did you actually read this post? If so you might want to read it again. Pingbacks are good. Pingbacks from yourself are bad.

You look very spammy and self-promoting to be approving pingbacks from your own posts. It is great internal linking to reference and link to other posts. But it is considered spammy to approve those pingbacks from yourself.

  18. Just went through and deleted all my internal pingback links! Thanks.
