Blue Moon

It's Blue, not Green

Did you notice Google slipped in one last PR update for 2009.

Did anyone get a late Christmas present from Uncle Google?

Or were you left a smaller lump of green coal in your task-bar than you had yesterday?

I looked up a few minutes ago to have my heart struck with Fear, for my green bar had shrunk and some green disappear.

Once upon a time the Lab rated PR5, a life goal attained and one more check-off for my bucket list. (I’m Kidding)

But a few algo changes, and time moved along, as Google changed the notes, to the Google PR song.  It slipped to a 4, while not as nice as a 5, a four is better than most, or so I surmised.

Then today I look up and see the Lab left with a 3  Oh, my, Oh me, a paltry 3.

Enough with the Bad Rhyme

Yeah, the Lab now has a PR3 for the home page.  Could it be worse?

LOL, yeah, how about a slap in the face to go with it.

I quickly started checking to see how the other children were doing.  After all if the Lab took a hit what of my poor little orphans that get little to no attention.  Well the waifs, faired better than I thought.
The photo blog Painting Tucson went from a PR2 to a PR3.  (What, a photo blog with equal PR to the Lab?)
The Life Observations and Random Thought ForNoREalReason blog jumped up to a PR3 from a PR2.  (Holy Cow pies)  Does PR mean anything any more?

The Bright spot for a geek, the Tucson AZ Real Estate Blog which has puttered along at PR3 for years is now a PR4.  (This is a geek bright moment.)

How Far They Have Fallen

My Post on the Fable of Do-Follow and Comments which at one time had a PR4 ranking all by itself is now a sliver of green at PR1.  Oh, NO, say it isn’t so?

Don’t Sweat the Green Stuff

I’m glad to see the diminished emphasis on PR.  It used to be the reason for consternation and hyperventilating among bloggers, especially RE Bloggers who tend to be obsessive anyway.  PR is not kryptonite in reverse.  It is not the lifeblood of your blog.  Content is the life blood, the skeleton, the bones, the muscle, and what delivers.

The Lab is the Lab, it survives because it provides a service to the blogging community and quality content.  (with the exception of this tripe).  People link to the Lab and posts at the Lab because they get help and answers.

You might want to pour a glass of something before you start checking your sites.  If you have more Green, then good for you.  If you have less, then remember, Tomorrow is another New Year.

Happy Blue Moon to all of you who visit the Lab.  Don’t sweat the green stuff.

I noticed movement on other sites but all mine stayed the same. I was hoping to see an increase on one of my sites but it didn’t happen.

    Hi Dave,
You and your lab have helped me understand a ton of things regarding SEO. So thanks for that. You deserve the Nobel Peace Price for SEO Ed.!!.. Yes, I noticed the recent PR update. My site was launched in Q4 of 2008 and I went to a PR0 -PR3 quickly in November I think it was. This week I looked and I am a PR 5. I have a bunch of subpages that are PR2 – PR3 which is great…But now what?! I have the highest ranked NJ Real Estate related website but my SERP’s which are what ultimately count are still where they were. My content is high quality in my opinion and my traffic has quadrupled in a short time.

I know how to gain SERP. Anchor text, etc. Is there ANY leverage I can use to help my SERP’s to capitalize? I can get 100 PR3-5 reciprocal links with anchor, but should I really take the time to bribe them with my PR5?? I’m guessing that could hurt me? Anyway, just looking for some advise from the lab! Thanks buddy and Happy New Year!

    Scott,

Sorry to be so long getting back to you on your comment. I’ve been way too busy on the Page Load Time issue the past couple of weeks. I’ll be glad when I throw my hands in the air and give up. But back to your comment.

Congratulations. A PR5 from Google in 2010 is quite the accomplishment. It is a PR that is getting harder and harder to attain and keep. That said, even though it is harder PR isn’t what it used to be. As you have discovered, a great PR is no longer the ticket alone to high organic placement in the SERPs.

I’ve done a little digging around on your site and need to do some more. As to your “bribe” for a backlink, I would only try that if you have a few posts you really, really want to get high on the search results. Then I would leverage that PR5 for some juice to push those higher.

But be aware that when you do, you risk the PR5 in the next update. It all depends on those 10ths of a percent. If your PR5 is because your ranking is 5.0 then you could loose it with more outgoing links. If your PR5 is from a ranking of 5.5 or higher, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about and can spread some Home page juice around a bit.

But before you go giving away juice we should look at other options. And that is where I need more time on site to make those kinds of suggestions. I’ll do my best to get back to your site for some analysis by early next week.

Happy New Year to you as well.

    Dave

    Hi Dave,

It tickles my funny bone that they tied the Page Rank update to the blue moon (and I think your post was the first time I made that connection) – sort of like the April Fools jokes they do. This update came so soon after the last one but it all made sense in light of (by the light of?!) the blue moon.

Does anyone know if Caffeine has anything to do with this? My website and blogs all took a 1-2 point PR hit also. I have been searching for answers all across the web to find out that no one really has a great answer. After reading Cutt’s blog I realize that maybe Google isn’t really strong on pagerank to me. Maybe social bookmarking and networking are the strongest factors these days.

Our site took a hit too. I was always told that you can’t change the rules in the middle of the game. We’ll keep trying different things to recover. Thanks for all the valuable tips and other content you provide!
