immortalityI can tell you how to do this, but there is a warning that must go along with the answer. Are you sure you want to do this?

I discovered this quite by accident. When checking this site in Google webmaster tools I notice each month highest PR page on the site is a post I wrote right after I set up this blog. When Your Blog Doesn’t Look Right. Honestly, I don’t need to link to it here.

Here is what I see in my results:

Your page with the highest PageRank
Jul http://www.realestatebloglab.com/plug-ins/when-your-blog-doesnt-look-right/
Jun http://www.realestatebloglab.com/plug-ins/when-your-blog-doesnt-look-right/
May http://www.realestatebloglab.com/plug-ins/when-your-blog-doesnt-look-right/

It had me baffled for months and months as to why this single post is the Page was the Highest PR I have. And why when most of my post head almost directly to supplemental results. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, direct to the small screen and the supplemental can beyond, And then this one stays in the active index month after month.

Then I found it. The one single blogroll link responsible for it all.

barrel cactusThanks to Eric Blackwell for his contribution of Eric Blackwell’s Must Have WordPress Plugins . By the way Eric now has the distinction of the post with the highest number of comments at 22. (Talk about give a guy a complex, a single guest post gets the highest number of comments since starting the blog).

I’m going to provide additional plugins that I find useful. Some I use on all my blogs, some just on the RE blogs.

A Word About Plugins

Not all plugins are created equal. It is very easy to end up with a blog of plugins. Many times there is a trade off when adding a plugin to your blog and you have to ask yourself if it is worth it. I break most plugins down into three categories:

  1. Utility plugins (add functionality to your blogs infrastructure)
  2. Feature plugins (add functionality to your blogs user interface)
  3. Bling plugins (add bling : ) enough said)

There are no bling plugins in Eric’s or my list (well maybe gravatar). Bling plugins often carry the highest overhead for load times to your blog. There are a few bling plugins or links on this site for testing and some of these plugins are borderline between added functionality and pure bling.

Eric’s list of plugins falls into the top two categories. No bling from Eric.

Here is my additional list of Nice to have Plugins by category.

Utility Plugins

barrel cactus orange flowersContextual Related Posts 1.1 I like this plugin because it does a pretty good job of listing other posts that could be associated with the topic or category of the current post. It provides inner linking to other posts on your blog and might entice a reader to go beyond the current post. I’ve noticed one thing that should be “fixed” with this plugin. If comments are closed on the post. Contextual Related Posts don’t appear at the bottom of the post.

Wordpress Database Backup 1.8 Everybody hates to do backups. But we are all warned to back up our database before we upgrade to the latest version of Wordpress (which it seems is almost every month). This is a quick and simple plugin to make backing up your database easy. I’ll be honest, I have know way of knowing how to restore this backup should I need it, but I figure I’ll cross that bridge if I ever need to when the need arises.

Feedburner Replacement 2.2 This plugin consolidates your feeds to feedburner and provides some other nifty stuff. 2.2 seems to be the latest version and has made some changes which appear to be more stable than earlier versions of the plugin.

Google sitemap Plugin 2.7.1 This is one of my favorite plugins. Everytime I hit the publish button on a post it generates a new sitemap and saves it to the root directory of the blog then pings Google. I still log into my Google webmaster account and hand resubmit the sitemap, but I know it is generated. There are a host of options that can be set for this plugin in the options page. If your site is all blog and not a directory of a website this plugin works great.

Feature Plugins

Maureen Francis of MIOaklandCounty asked “On another note, I am looking around for any must have WP plugins. Would like to see a bunch of us post what we are using to see what we can learn.”

Eric is the first victim volunteer to share his list of plugins and in so doing became the first guest contributor to the Lab.

I first met Eric at The Real Estate Webmaster Forum. He is a wealth of information and always providing good solid advice and answers to many questions. He has started his own blog EricOnSearch check it out.

Eric’s Must Have Wordpress Plugins (and some others)

pluginI think we can all start to agree that WordPress…when hosted on your own, is a STELLAR blogging platform. In Search Engine terms, you want something that is adaptable and flexible to the changes that Google and the other search engines make on a fairly frequent basis. For most bloggers, you also want to add some good ways to make your site interactive, without having to be a coding genius to pull it off..The large base of WordPress users, theme designers, plugin coders, and widget builders allow for much flexibility and improvement—which is key.

Please keep in mind that not all of these plugins will work with all themes. I have tried to confine these “must haves” to ones that will work with MOST themes and in MOST situations. Please feel free to add or chime in on this post if you have additional resources: Also, for the record, where there are many choices in certain types of plugins, I tried to select the ones with the best support (just in case you get in a jam).

I have not put links in in all cases. Simply Google the names of the plugins (followed by plugin if it does not have that) and you will find them right away.

Do Follow Plugins

dofollow – removes the nofollow from comments. I am a fan of sharing the link love and moderating post comments to make sure that what you get is quality.

For the ultimate list of Do Follow resources check this out Andy Beard has a TON of ways to manage the links on any type of blog.

Spam Blockers

Did you pass math – spam blocker

Akismet-better spam blocker-the original

SEO Plugins

Dagon Design Sitemap Generator- Simply the best sitemap generator IMO (And with internal linking being evermore important, this is big)

another wordpress meta plugin – there are many of these type available out there. They allow you to choose title, description, keywords, etc…I simply like this one the best

Ultimate Tag Warrior: Like the one above, it adds tags to each of your posts. However it is much more configurable..

Have you ever wanted a multi billion dollar company to get your information to the world in seconds and for the amazingly low price of FREE!

corn on the cobLast week I wrote the post Google Search Results faster than a Speeding Nanite The short of it, I was beginning to notice my blog posts were showing up in regular Google search results in minutes and not days like they used to. I’m not going into the process again here you can read the post.

Here is the point. I’ve been tracking this for all four of the main blogs I write. The results are conclusive. YES! This wonderful amazing company called Google is getting my blog posts to the world in minutes.

I’m in Love,
Oh yes in Love,

I don’t care if the Google Dance is a hard one.
I’m in Love, I’m in Love with you, My Google.

Google The object of my affection

Last night we drove up to Phoenix to pick up a car. It was 1 o’clock in the morning when we got home. I was tired for that matter everyone was tired. So it was a quick check of the sites to make sure all was well (they are like children you know). Next, check email then it was off to bed.

I was brushing my teeth when the lovely tired wife says;
“Oh, I need you to write a blog post about The Oro Valley Farmer’s Market Corn Festival tomorrow.”
I said, “OK, when is it?”
“Saturday.”
To which I said, “honey, tomorrow is Friday, you want me to write a blog post about an event that will be just one day away. We won’t have time for it to get out in the search engines in one day. I need a few more days, it is better if I have at least four days notice.”

“But Honey, (I hate it when she calls me ‘but honey’ : ) you told me you are having things show up in minutes on Google”

End of discussion. Alarm goes off a little after 6 am. Of to the office (on the other side of the house).

  • Scan the little flyer taken from the refrigerator door.
  • Clip the section on the corn festival
  • Clean up image of corn on the cob
  • Upload the images
  • Write the post
  • Publish
  • Autopinger send ping

I hit the shower and when I come back into the office I do a blogsearch.google.com for Oro Valley Farmers Market Corn Festival. BAM! It says: Posted by Dave 22 minutes ago.

I search Google for the same phrase and Oro Valley Corn Festival.

YES, YES, YES, It is There. 22 minutes after I write and publish a post about the Oro Valley Corn Festival it is announced to the world.

At which point my beautiful wife makes her appearance in the office to find me with a Huge Grin on my face like I was seeing something I shouldn’t.

“What?”

“Go to Google and type in Oro Valley Corn Festival

She does, and there is our blog post page 1, #1 in Google Search Results.

Am I the ONLY person in the entire blogosphere this is excited about this?

RE Bloggers do you understand the implication of this? Please, please, please say you do.

Google is publishing our Press Releases almost before we finish writing them.

The Digital Photography Book

I recently wrote about the Importance of Tagging your photos in a blog post in “Photos and overlooked part of your blog traffic.”

Now I want to talk about taking better digital photos and introduce you to a great book “The Digital Photography Book”.

But first a quick look at what is being said about photography, real estate and blogging in the RE Blog community.

Athol Kay probably has one of the largest collections of bad real estate photos in existence and it is growing every day. I love looking at them, but imagine what he has at the end of the day and megabytes of storage later, lots of bad and very bad photos. Athol is also doing his best to limit the number of submissions through a series of post on taking better photos in his Photos Category. There are other post under this category as well, but all of his stuff on photos is interesting and fun. I just linked to an entire category on a blog. I’ve never done that before.

Teresa Broadman (becoming even more famous after Blogger Connect in SF) has some wonderful photos as examples on her StPaulRealEstateBlog and she give some hints in her interview with Todd Carpenter at Remex. Kris Kraft in Denver has an interesting post also encouraging sellers to have a look at what the listing agent is using for photos to market their home in The Importance of Photos. Athol would have told Kris to make that “The Importance of Good Photos”.

I ran across a book a couple of weeks ago and I really want to recommend it to anyone that wants to take better digital photographs.

I’ve been taking photos since I was 5 years old. My first camera was a brownie box camera. My latest Purchase a Nikon D40.

The arrival of monsoon here in Tucson has already spurred some great sunsets and as I write this I’m reminded to save often as we can hear the thunder rolling outside with an occasional flash of bright light from the lightening.

I know from years of experience behind the camera that no one is ever happy with the results they get. We always want our photos to be better.

Scott Kelby’s “The Digital Photography Book” will help you take better photos.

First, Scott is truly a closet comedian. He is funny in a marvelously bent way. I’m glad he didn’t constrain his sense of humor when writing this book. The book is broken down into sections and each section has one page chapters if it is fair to call them chapters. They are gems of photographic insight into how to make your digital photos better.

Scott sets the book up as if we were invited along on photo shoots as one of his buddies. He provides us tips on the various situations and how to set them up. There is no needless filler. There is no dry explanations of shutter speed, ISO, Aperture Priority etc. It is simple down to earth ways to set up and take great shots.

I got mine from Amazon.com You can also get it from Scott’s site: http://www.scottkelbybooks.com/

This is a great handbook. Quick to read, easy to implement and you will take better photos using the information Scott provides in this book.

Once you go to Scott’s site you will quickly realize this guy knows what he is talking about.

He is somewhat of a Macgyver of photography, you don’t have to have an expensive gadget or filter for everything, sometimes a shower curtain from Wal-Mart or a shower cap from your hotel room will do. Once you read the book you will know what I’m talking about.

This is another reason why I like this book, he doesn’t tell you to go out and spend thousands of dollars on expensive camera equipment to get great photos. Apply what he says to the digital camera you have and you will get better results.

I shot this just a few minutes before writing this post as the storm was approaching using a tip from Scott’s book.

Storm clouds coming Tucson Monsoon

There is a post on Tucson Monsoon Season which has a video montage presentation of clouds and sunsets. What I learned from Scott’s book was invaluable when taking the photos used in the montage.

If you own a digital camera you won’t regret buying this book. Oh, I should probably mention you also have to read it to get better photos, just buying it won’t do the trick.

Speeding Nanite Header

Do you check your posts when you published?

I have a routine when I publish a new post. Especially now that I’m tracking the test site Tucson AZ Real Estate. The routine is as follows:

  • Publish the post
  • Ping (now using autopinger, it pings Google)
  • Wait 15 minutes
  • Go to blogsearch.google.com and search the title tag
  • If not found search related keywords

Sometimes it even takes a day before it will show up for some reason, but usually it is there in 15 minutes or less.

Then I start checking for the title in regular Google searches. It usually takes a day or two for them to show up in the regular Google search index.

Last night I published a post on Tucson Condo Market – Summer 2007 I switched tabs on the browser to key in a search for Tucson Condo Market summer 2007. I forgot to go to blogsearch google. Instead I was searching regular Google less than 20 minutes after the post was published. IT WAS THERE! I couldn’t believe my eyes at first. While I was going on about this to Barbara she searched just Tucson Condo Market and said “It is here too for just Tucson Condo Market. She wasn’t as impressed as I.

This is the kind of post that is time related since the results of a Google search are constantly changing. Here is the Google search for Tucson Condo Market. I have an older post on the Tucson Real Estate in The News blog that ranks high but the result right now for what we are looking at is Tucson AZ Real Estate. It isn’t the actual post being indexed but the main page with the latest post content. Later the post itself will index with it’s own title.

Is anyone else seeing anything like this happening to your blog posts?

Is Google Taking Blog Pings and adding them to their index?

I am guessing here, but I wonder if Google is taking the ping from blogs which usually turn up on blogsearch.google in minutes and quickly indexing those pings into their regular search results. Maybe it an experiment, maybe it was just lucky timing.

But what if it is the next wave. What if you can publish a post and have it found in Google search results in a matter of minutes not days? Can you see how this might influence your decisions about what to write and when. If you could say (Scoop) anyone in your market with information by posting on your blog and having it in Google right away?

This is my question. Is anyone seeing anything like this?

UPDATE: Less than 20 minutes after publishing this post, it was in the Regular Google Index. I know there are a lot of searches on Google Search Results but not with speeding nanite in the title. When it is unique like that I can find it faster.

UPDATE: UPDATE: The new post RE Photographers get The Digital Photography Book was indexed in blogsearch google in 6 minutes from publish. I also put a number of names in that post in bold. I searched those names and they also came up associated with this new post first.
